Crowns and Bridges

Living with decayed, damaged, or missing teeth can significantly impact your daily life. Eating and chewing food comfortably becomes challenging with a compromised tooth, while smiling or talking with others may cause you to feel self-conscious about gaps in your smile or damaged teeth.

The good news is that your team at Mountain Vista Dental offers excellent solutions for troubled teeth, whether they’re damaged or missing, with dental crowns and bridges. In some cases, we may even be able to complete the restoration the same day.

Why Is It Important to Replace or Repair Your Tooth?

Restoring your smile and dental health has several advantages to consider. Here’s what you should know.
Stops Tooth Movement
Replacing a missing tooth protects neighboring teeth from shifting and causing bite misalignment.
Restores Function
Restoring a damaged or missing tooth ensures that you enjoy comfortable chewing function.
Prevents Infection
Without repair, a tooth that’s severely fractured or decayed could result in a painful infection.
Improves Aesthetics
Replacing a missing tooth or restoring a damaged tooth enhances your smile’s aesthetics.

How Dental Crowns Repair Compromised Teeth

A dental crown fits over a tooth, covering it completely like a cap to restore its strength, function, and aesthetics, while also protecting the integrity of its root. Our dentist design your crown to closely mimic your natural tooth, providing excellent function and blending seamlessly into your smile.

Dr. Carlson will determine whether a lab-based or same-day dental crown will best suit your needs. A lab-based crown takes a couple of weeks to finish as a dental lab handcrafts it based on his specifications.

How a Dental Bridge Replaces Missing Teeth

A dental bridge can comfortably replace one or more adjacent missing teeth. It relies on dental crowns that attach to your healthy teeth and support one or two prosthetic teeth attached in between.

A dental bridge is a fixed appliance that restores function, fills in the gaps left by missing teeth, and provides smile aesthetics. It can be an excellent alternative solution for a patient who cannot or doesn’t want to undergo the surgical procedure required for a tooth implant.

Frequently Asked Questions

Dental crowns represent a significant investment in your oral health, and proper maintenance is essential to maximize their longevity and functionality. At Mountain Vista Dental, Dr. Carlson recommends the following evidence-based protocol for optimal crown care:

Daily Maintenance

Maintain thorough oral hygiene by brushing twice daily with a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste, paying particular attention to the crown-gum margin where bacteria tend to accumulate.

You can implement daily flossing, using a gentle sawing motion rather than forceful upward pressure to prevent crown dislodgement.

Consider incorporating an antimicrobial mouthwash to reduce bacterial colonization around the crown.

Dietary Considerations

Exercise caution with particularly hard foods (such as ice or hard candies) and avoid using the crowned tooth to open packages or bite into non-food items.

Minimize consumption of chewy foods that could potentially compromise crown integrity or retention.

Professional Care

Adhere to your recommended schedule of biannual professional cleanings and examinations at Mountain Vista Dental.

Report any changes in your bite alignment, sensitivity, or crown appearance promptly for evaluation.

Warning Signs

Persistent pain or sensitivity around the crown may indicate infection or fit issues requiring immediate assessment.

Visible fractures, chips, or mobility of the crown require a prompt professional intervention.

With proper care and regular professional monitoring, your dental crown should provide reliable function for 5 to 15 years. For additional information or concerns regarding your dental restorations, please contact our Colorado Springs dental office at your earliest convenience.

What’s the Process for Getting a Dental Crown or Bridge in Colorado Springs?

Completing a crown or bridge is a straightforward process. Dr. Carlson will assess your situation and determine what type of restoration is best for your needs.

If a same-day crown suits you, we’ll schedule you back to have impressions and your crown made, and you’ll leave that appointment with your new tooth completed. If a lab-based restoration is better for your needs, we’ll schedule you for a preparation appointment with Dr. Carlson, and you’ll return to Mountain Vista Dental in two to three weeks when your new restoration is completed.

You can request an appointment for an evaluation at our Colorado Springs dental office online or talk with a team member at (719) 598-8886.

Crowns and Bridges Technology

CEREC Same-Day Restorations

At Mountain Vista Dental, Dr. Carlson uses CEREC technology to create beautiful crowns, fillings, and other restorations in just one visit. Instead of messy impressions with goopy material, we use a small digital camera to take detailed pictures of your tooth.

Our computer then designs your custom restoration, and our in-office milling machine crafts it from high-quality ceramic that matches your natural teeth perfectly. This means you don't have to wear a temporary crown, no second appointments, and no waiting weeks for your restoration to come back from a lab.

You'll leave our Colorado Springs dental office with your permanent restoration completed the same day, saving you time while giving you excellent, long-lasting results.
